The final inspection report by the USDA on May 3, 2022 revealed no serious animal health concerns at the Envigo/Inotiv research dog breeding facility in Cumberland, VA. So why did they close and how might this impact public health moving forward? Summary of USDA inspections and citations along with “repeats” not yet resolved at the time of inspection. NOTE: The PETA infiltrator assumed a caregiver role in April 2021 and resigned on either 11/2 or 11/3/21. PETA released its “investigative report” on 11/8/21.

NOTE: This single “repeat” citation was related to remaining issues with flooring. While this is still a potential risk to animal health and well-being, no clearly sick or injured animals were reported. Only two weeks later, however…

“On May 18, authorities from the USDA and the Department of Justice confiscated 145 dogs in need of immediate medical care from Envigo’s facility in Cumberland, Virginia, according to a complaint filed the next day by the DOJ in federal court against Envigo. The Humane Society of the United States assisted in the seizures.” [Click to read article.] 

I have still not seen a description or images of the “life-threatening” illnesses/injuries reported here for the 446 dogs, in total, that were seized. Maybe I missed them or maybe….hmmm….
